Heavy on fashion talks to The Blonds
Hello, all my divas and gurus! I am so happy to bring you another exclusive interview. This time, I had the chance to chat with one of the hottest fashion design duos in the industry, The Blonds. The Blonds are known for their unique and fun approach to style. The design duo, The Blondes worked with many celebs such as Madonna, Fergie, Ariana Grande, and Miley Cyrus. The use of Preciosa crystals, pearls, and beads with a rock glam attitude makes The Blonds an exciting designing duo.
So Without Further ado, here is Heavy on fashion talks to The Blonds
How did the Blonds come to be?
David: Before we met, Phillipe and I were working within different areas of the fashion industry. After our meeting, we started creating pieces for ourselves and our friends to wear. A very good friend of ours, Patricia Field, suggested we put a line together. Phillipe and I started thinking about what truly inspired us. Our views and aesthetic around style are the same and gravitate mostly to Music and Film. Everything in our world was already blonde so The Blonds were born!
When did you realize you wanted to become a fashion designer?
What was your inspiration?
Phillipe: We've both been obsessed with fashion our whole lives. Once we met it was sort of like magic, and I guess you can say we inspired each other to take that next step!
Describe the general process you go through to design and realize a piece of clothing and how do you determine when to include Preciosa into the designs?
David: Usually we get inspiration from a story that is character driven or a piece of music we love. Typically it's something very personal to us and that is the seed of the process. There are always several different ideas at play and we like to mix unusual and opposing themes together. Once the sketches are done, we begin production and never really ask ourselves the question of when to use Preciosa, because the answer is generally EVERY TIME!
What is the most unconventional item have you ever used in designing?
Phillipe: A set of Steel Shark Jaws!
What makes the Blonds different from other fashion lines?
David: I believe what sets The Blonds apart from other labels is that we have no limits creatively.
How did you decide to include Preciosa into your designs for Madonna, Fergie, Ariana Grande, and Miley Cyrus?
Phillipe: Madonna, Madonna, MADONNA! This was one of the most beautiful garments we've ever created. The piece represented a sort of finale of a bull fight and Preciosa’s tear drop elements worked perfectly with the rose motif as a dew and crystallized blood illusion. There was also a hand embroidered lace overlay on nude tone silk satin, and this was enhanced with faceted crystal gunmetal and jet beads, giving the piece a luxe feel. For Fergie’s look, we created a collage from her album artwork as the digital print on silk and then utilized Preciosa hotfix in complimentary colors to enhance the artwork giving it an almost pavé effect and three-dimensional quality.
David: Ariana's performance was a 60's future scene and we decided to create her look in the silhouette of a streamlined spacecraft. With that in mind, each segment of the piece's patterns was drawn from solar systems. We used Preciosa elements to pavé every inch of the piece including the metal mesh panels of her skirt. The stone ranged in sizes so needless to say, this was a very labor intense process to map out and execute. Miley's piece was so amazing…it was covered in Preciosa Crystal neon daisies and a matching halter Disco jumpsuit! She is SO much fun to work with because we're able to turn the volume up on everything. Using every color we could get our hands on, the piece became a rainbow explosion and the perfect way to open the 2015 MTV Music Video Awards.
What are your favorite color crystals to work with and why?
Phillipe: That's a tough question because they each have a slightly different personality, sort of like people. Each tone makes you feel a different mood or vibration and that is what helps us define the selection for each project. Crystal, overall, is our favorite material to work with and has become The Blonds signature.
Who are some of your favorite designers?
David: We're film buffs and have always admired the work of costume designers like Edith Head, Schiaparelli, Travilla, and so many that still inspire us. In fashion, any designer that is brave enough to push the envelope and express their individually is an inspiration to us.
What do you hope to have achieved in the industry, 10 years from now?
Phillipe: We'd like to reach a broader audience and inject some much-needed glamor and magic into their lives!
Describe The Blonds woman?
David: Strong, powerful, and glamorous! Our clients are not afraid to express themselves and make a statement.
Finally, What does fashion mean to you?
Phillipe: Fashion means nothing, it's an individual sense of style that makes all the difference!
